The Center for Urban and Community Design (CUCD) was founded in 1992 in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew with the mission of fostering a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach to create and strengthen sustainable communities and buildings. The CUCD seeks to integrate research, teaching, and service, encouraging interdisciplinary thought and action in the areas of historic preservation, urban design & community engagement, and sustainable & resilient design in the subtropics and tropics. The CUCD assists or leads faculty, alumni and students in funded research, publications, and community partnerships, workshops and charrettes.
Drawing on its foundational efforts in post-disaster recovery, the School of Architecture (SoA) and Climate Resilience Institute (CRI) will partner to advance the CUCD approach with shared design and resilience strategies that are critical to shaping an interdisciplinary approach for community-centered climate resilience. The collaborative processes and solutions that emerge can provide inspiration and guidance for efficient and effective response to future challenges.
