The CUCD believes that effective communication among citizens, experts, and politicians lies at the foundation of a strong democracy and of any integrative participatory process that supports the creation of livable and enduring settlements.

The CUCD promotes direct collaboration between students, faculty, and communities in county-wide or regional initiatives, translating academic knowledge into real-life experiences that encourage life-long civic engagement while placing value on the environment and the preservation of cultural and built heritage. The Center promotes hands-on learning experiences, at times, set within the core curriculum, underlining the historic role of the Architect as a civic leader. In addition, the CUCD provides Research Assistants with the opportunity to earn needed Intern Development Program (IDP) Credit Hours.
